Kyra Johnson (Michelle Pfeiffer), who has divorced from her husband, moves to her elderly mother's house in Brooklyn. Middle-aged Kyra, while searching for a job, tries to stand on her own feet. With the sudden death of her mother, Kyra is left with no emotional or financial support. With no good options left, Kyra starts a relationship with her understanding neighbor (Kiefer Sutherland) who is dealing with his own troubles. However, she refuses to accept her once trouble-free life being turned upside down and resorts to increasingly dangerous paths to hold on to what little she has left.
