Paul Bonnard (Rossano Brazzi), growing up by reading his father's diaries and listening to his adventurous stories, sets out on a journey to find his father's remains lost in the Sahara desert and to discover the mysterious lost city of Ophir, filled with hidden treasures mentioned in the diaries. To do so, he travels to Africa, specifically Timbuktu.
His goal is to leave from a place that nobody has ever thought of going, somewhere deep within the Sahara Desert. Along the way, he crosses paths with Joe January (John Wayne), a guide who knows the Sahara Desert like the back of his hand. And of course, there is someone else who joins them later on. She is Dita (Sophia Loren), who is involved in various activities, including theft, in Timbuktu...
