Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) is a young Irish woman who decides to leave her mother behind and immigrate to the United States, specifically New York, in pursuit of better opportunities. Although she initially feels a deep longing for her homeland, her love for Tony (Emory Cohen), whom she meets in New York, helps her forget about everything else. However, she soon finds herself needing to return to Ireland, where she becomes acquainted with Jim (Domhnall Gleeson), who manages to captivate her. Eilis is faced with a difficult choice between two countries, two vastly different lifestyles, and two loves.
