Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson), a psychologically disturbed, obsessive, and sharp-tongued love novel writer, is known for his unchanging routine of having breakfast at a nearby cafe. Carol (Helen Hunt) is the only waitress who can tolerate him, but life is tough for her as a single mother trying to raise her asthmatic son. Greg Kinnear plays the unfortunate role of Melvin's neighbor, a talented painter who is the new darling of the art world and happens to be gay, which is enough to provoke Melvin's anger.
The destinies of these three New Yorkers, who seem to have no chance of finding true happiness, intertwine with the unfolding events.
