Jordan Benedict Jr. (Rock Hudson), the owner of the largest cattle ranch and vast lands in the state of Texas, visits a horse farm on the other side of the country to buy an award-winning horse. There, he falls in love with Leslie (Elizabeth Taylor), the headstrong and intellectual daughter of the farm owner. They get married and move to the magnificent Benedict Mansion in the middle of the vast prairie. However, Luz Benedict, Jordan's sister, who is in charge of managing the estate, is not willing to hand over the management to the new bride. Furthermore, she has taken under her wing Jett Rink (James Dean), a rebellious and ambitious man who grew up with Jordan and Leslie on the ranch and refuses to get along with Jordan or submit to his authority. The story begins in the 1920s and unfolds within the dynamics of this quartet's relationships.
Spanning into the 1950s, the film witnesses the upheaval of traditional lives with the emergence of Texas' first oil giants, the wounds caused by American racism, the passions and loves in the lives of a respected, large land-owning family spanning two generations, and the birth of the third generation destined to live completely different lives. One memorable scene in the film depicts Jordan and Leslie's reunion after their first major argument, which remains etched in the memories of Hollywood and film enthusiasts. Based on a novel, this magnificent film, which has won numerous awards, was selected for preservation among the films that need to be protected in 2005.
