Edward Cole (JACK NICHOLSON), the millionaire company owner, and Carter Chambers (MORGAN FREEMAN), the working-class car mechanic, lead completely different lives. Their paths intersect when they share a hospital room and discover that they have two common desires: to spend the rest of their lives doing everything they've always wanted to do before "checking out" and a need for self-acceptance they were unaware of.
